Here
I go again -- another book project built around old scraps of writing. This one
is an experiment in nostalgia, only it is less sunny than disturbing. In the
late 60s I tried desperately to join a hippie movement I read about in Life
Magazine. But everywhere I went looking for it, I found something very
different.
I tried to write this on a cabin vacation about 8 years ago and wound up with a raggedy first draft, told entirely within the point of view of a lost lamb from Ohio wandering through the worst excesses of Los Angeles and Boston in 1969. I'm going to rewrite it now in 360-degree mode -- reflecting upon those days from the present day. ("What was I thinking?!") I have a curious relationship to this material -- I think it's wonderful, but also horribly embarrassing. My adventure started out as a lark, but people got hurt. And we did things that haunt me to this day. Even now, I am wondering about putting it all in print -- I have teenaged kids myself, and don't them to misunderstand my point of view on that era of my life. I have at least 40 interesting stories to get down in time. I could put up the whole notebook now but it is disjointed and inconclusive. As I fix these pieces I will put them up, one by one.
